Chairman's Message

Prof. Muditha Vidanapathirana

He had his post MD foreign training at the University of Glasgow, Scotland, and became Board-certified as a specialist in Forensic Medicine in 2002 and joined the Department of Forensic Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, the University of Ruhuna as a Lecturer in Forensic Medicine. Held the post of Head of the Department from 2004-2010. He was released to the University of Sri Jayewardenepura in 2010 and was appointed as the Chair Professor of Forensic Medicine in 2016. There, he held the post of head of the Department from 2016-2019. 

He has been appointed as a visiting lecturer and an Examiner in numerous universities and he has been appointed as the Chief examiner of several postgraduate examinations such as Pg. Diploma in Legal Medicine (DLM) and Doctorate of Medicine (MD) in Forensic Medicine, conducted by the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine (PGIM), Colombo. 

As a Postgraduate Supervisor and a trainer, he has supervised more than 15 successful postgraduate students in DLM and MD in Forensic Medicine. He has established several Moues between local and international Universities. He was appointed as a Consultant to the UN and conducted a Training of trainers program for Maldivian doctors in 2014 and 2015. He has supervised many local and international research students. He has supervised several elective students of many continents such as Europe, Asia, America, and Australia. 

He has published four (05) books and the most recent book is “Identification, Prevention, and Management of Child abuse”. He has more than 200 local and international scientific publications. He has won several awards for research and publications including presidential awards for Research. He is an editor and member of the editorial board in several scientific Journals including the Medico-Legal Journal of Sri Lanka. A member of the organizing committee of several scientific sessions. He has participated, organized, and has been a resource person in many international and local workshops. 

He has held multiple positions and became the 11th President of the College of Forensic Pathologists of Sri Lanka (2014) and a Council member of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura (2018, 2019 onwards). He developed and conduct a Diploma in Forensic Medicine and Toxicology (DFMT) -at the Department of Forensic Medicine since 2019. He further, developed a Centre for Advanced Forensic Research (CAFoR) and became the founder Director in 2019. He is in the process of developing a Pg. Diploma in Child protection and rights with the collaboration of NCPA.  

Currently, he holds the position of Chair Professor of Forensic Medicine since 2016 and was appointed as the chairman of the National child protection authority by H.E. the President on 1st of January 2020.

Mrs. Sujatha Alahapperuma

She took primary and secondary education at St. Marys Convent Matara. Having sat for Advanced level exam in Sri Lanka she pursued her higher studies at the Sri Lanka Law College. At the end of her tenure, she got through Attorneys-At-Law finals examination in 1984.

Afterwards she commenced her practice in Matara courts as a junior lawyer to Attorney-At-Law Mr. Mahinda Wijesekara. After a one year period she began her own practice as a Criminal lawyer and a Notary Republic in the same courts.

In year 1989 she returned to Colombo and started work in Hulsdorph Courts. From her early years she had a dream of serving the country as a Judge, and in 1994 she sat for the Magistrate exam and was appointed as a Magistrate.

Until the year 2014 she was serving as a Magistrate and a District Judge across the country in several challenging locations. In year 2014 she was appointed as the Colombo District Judge and the President of the Judges Association of Sri Lanka.

As a value addition to her career she participated in several overseas training programs such as “knowledge sharing sessions for members of the Sri Lankan Judiciary” in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, “IP property rights” in Washington, training sessions at the National Judicial Academy, Bhopal in India, seminar and training at the Judicial Reform and Excellence in Singapore and on “Court Management, Case Management, Civil Law at Delhi Judicial Academy in New Delhi etc.

On 19th Feb 2015 she was appointed as a High Court Judge, and first served in Tangalle High Court, afterwards was transferred to Kalutara High Court. On 08th Feb 2019 she officially retired from the Judiciary service.

Currently she is with the National Child Protection Authority as the Deputy Chairperson.
